Lavender Iris - 1951 - Georgia O'Keeffe |
In these parts I have often quoted my Valencian abuelita who often told me when I was puttering and not doing anything useful, “Cuando el diablo no tiene nada quehacer con el rabo espanta moscas.”
In English it doesn’t sound as funny, “When the devil is bored with his tail he swats flies.”
And so as these days progress where I perform my household menialities which are inspired by my over 90 Argentine friend Leah Patrich. She told me once when I had placed an empty coffee cup and spoon on a table (and did not take it to the kitchen), “Alex, todo en su lugar es el orden,” or, “Alex, everything in its place is order.”
So I putter, read, call friends who don’t answer or tell me they are about to have supper, walk Niño and, more often than not, I get on my bed and stare at the ceiling.
Every once in a while there aren’t enough flies to swat so I have to create something pleasant to keep me going. And so I have scanned a blue iris from my garden inspired by Georgia O’Keeffe’s Lavender Iris – 1951.
