It was impossible to be a good photographer in that last century without pushy art directors who worked for magazines and newspapers that then existed. You needed to read photography books and find mentors to inspire you. Also important was a support staff of camera and photographic lighting equipment repairmen.
In this century my mechanical cameras all work perfectly but that is not the case with my two digital cameras, a Fuji X-E1 and X-E3. Both were suggested and sold to me by Jeff Gin who worked for Leo’s Camera on Granville for 30 years. He is now the manager of Kerrisdale Cameras on Lonsdale. I went to see him early this morning.
Why?
Modern digital cameras prove that inanimate objects can have free will. My Fujis do what they want without telling me. A couple of weeks ago my X-E3 would not shoot as it was informing me it wanted to pair with my phone.
So my ultimate support staff, Jeff Gin, took care of it. Of course until my cameras decide otherwise. What may work out is that I now have dedicated the X-E1 to use only the Lensbaby. While the X-E3 will have its lovely zoom lens.
As I was about to leave Jeff suggested, “Alex go out and take photographs.” This I did, and on my way home, I stopped where that crooked building soars over Alberni and used my Lensbaby. Here are the results.
And of course I thank my support staff also for the inspiration. I don’t usually shoot buildings or architecture. But I did have fun.
