Karoline & Gary Cullen |
There is a paradox in the modern digital photographs taken with good digital cameras. While being sharp, saturated (intense colour) and with lots of contrast, to me almost do not look real.
Perhaps I am even older than my 82 years as I long for the years (I was not alive) when photography was invented. It was determined by many then, that this newfangled form of imaging portrayed reality.
I have always loved hyper realistic art like that of my favourite Canadian Alex Colville.
Photography did inspire those artists, as many in their landscapes featured skies darkened by imitating photographic polarizers.
I visitited my Tsawwassen friends Karoline and Gary Cullen about a month ago. Sitting at their kitchen I noticed outside the window, mountains, sky and sea. I was dumbfounded as their home does not have that view.
Karoline Cullen is a fine photographer. She had had several of her photographs printed in a huge size and put them on the wooden garden fence.
So I had an idea. One of the large posters depicted their red Citröen 2CV in a French poppy field.
I set up my Mamiya RB-67 on a tripod loaded with Ektachrome and snapped 8. I don’t remember if I used a softbox. I may have.
The result I think was successful. On Saturday 23 November I will give them these two that look very nice as inkjets.
