Rosa 'Mary Magdalene' 2 July 2023 |
Today Sunday July 2, 2023 I had a pleasant day. My wife’s friend, widow Jennifer Lamb called me and asked me if I would accompany her to a rose garden in Surrey. I answered, “Because I want to say no, I will say yes.”
When she arrived at noon I showed her four blooms of English Rose Rosa ‘Mary Magdalene’ (there are few roses in bloom now in my garden as they are in-between stages). I then snipped them and placed them over my scanner. I did three scans. The first one seen here is the one Jennifer liked. I sized the photograph, printed it and signed it. I put the scanograph approximately 15 minutes after I snipped the roses. Take that, 20th century! Some things are better in this one.
The image of Mary Magdalene is a Titian in St. Petersburg. The nude one that Rosemary and I saw in Florence she shows her breasts. Both are called “The Penitent Mary Magdalene."

David Austin chose well in naming my myrrh scented Mary Magdalene. It emerges as pink as a harlot and as it ages it becomes a virginal white.
Brother Edwin Reggio, C.S.C. taught us that when Christ got on his knees and wrote something on the ground when men were about to stone Mary Magdalene, it represents the only moment when we can suspect that Christ knew how to write.
Of late I have discovered that hostas and roses are good companions on my scanner.
