Since Christmas may daughter has called my situation of depression and not writing my blogs as a funk. I prefer the Spanish word desganado which translates to “not wanting to”. My only defense is that my cats Niño and Niña get on top of me when I am on the bed and time passes. Before I know it I find out that it is dark outside.
The single most important chore of the day is, weather permitting, to take Niño for his walk around the block sans leash.
On sunny days, the few we have had, I cheer up a tad. Today I took the advice of my garden friend Terri Clark who told me, “Go to Southlands and buy yourself a hellebore." That is exactly what I did.

But something most interesting happened. I took a plant that used to grace our Kerrisdale kitchen beginning in 1988 when we bought it in Seattle. In the last 6 years it has been in our bedroom by the window. How many plants last that long and bloom in this bleak February?
At Southlands one of the employees pointed her phone at the plant and told me , “Your plant is Sinningna leucotricha and it is from Brazil."
The fact that I had to find a way of scanning it and the hellebore (both in large pots) was an iffy task.
Rosemary loved hellebores so I bought one remembering how pleased she would have been when I brought it home.
The scanning of the two plants may have mended my funk and I may be on my way to livening up, smiling more and writing more blogs.
And beginning a spring cleanup of the garden.
