Exploding Joy

Since I can remember Argentines have had a strange relationship with Americans. To this day you will find on Buenos Aires walls, “¡Fuera imperialistas yankis!” But we Argentines have always had a fondness for American goods.
In my pre-teenage youth in Buenos Aires there were two American products I had to have. One was a pair of Levi Jeans and the other, either Fleer’s Double Bubble or the orange flavoured Bazooka. My friends and I could not understand why it was that Juan Domingo Perón could not persuade an Argentine company to make bubble gum.
It was with that nostalgia in mind that I gave Leslie (on the best bed of the best room of the not-so-best Marble Arch Hotel) a stick of Double Bubble.
