It is a tough slog going through all my stuff in trying to reduce the amount of material in my files. Sifting through the tears sheets of the Globe and Mail, National Post, The Province, Vancouver Sun, Quill 7 Quire, Now, Georgia Straight and even the Richmond Chinese newspaper I found some  odd but perhaps interesting images that I took so many years ago. Note the colour of the newsprint which I could correct with Photoshop.

The first photograph of the little Native Canadian girl reading at the Infant Jesus of Prague Catholic Church in the Burrard Reserve in North Vancouver shows what happens when you have worked enough for a publication where the writers and art directors trust your judgment. This picture was accompanied by many others taken by photographers across Canada to celebrate National Reading Day. I chose to go to the Burrard Reserve and I purposely took the photograph to make it look like an old snap from another century. The paper did not conserve my oval framing but I was still happy with the result.

The second picture which was about The International Year of Older Persons. This photograph was published May 22, 1999 when I was 56 and my wife 55. Were we old then? It seems that the Globe was in a bind and I was instructed to do something to illustrate the page. Rosemary and I went to the Nitobi Japanese Garden at UBC and took this selfie on a tripod.

The third picture is one of the few times that I commanded the front page of the Globe. The date was November 1 1997.
