Cuando leí ese fragmento de Borges, supe que aunque he escrito varias veces sobre mi descubrimiento de que yo era yo cuando tenía 6 años, lo tenía que hacer otra vez.
When I read that Borges fragment, I knew that even though I had written a few times about my discovering that I was me when I was 6, I had to do that again.
The photo here with my mother and father has the date January 1948 in the back. I was 6. We had just moved into the house on Melián 2770 in the Goghlan neighbourhood of Buenos Aires.
La foto aquí con mi papá y mamá tiene la fecha detrás del 6 de enero de 1948. Tenía 6 años. Nos acababámos de mudar a la casa en Melián 2770 en el barrio de Coghlan en Buenos Aires.
My mother, who was teaching chemistry and physics at an American high school on Belgrano R, had friends in the American Embassy. One day she brought a package of candy corn and gave me a few. They were delicious. She then put the package in an armoire.
Mi mamá enseñaba física y química en la Escuela American muy cerca de la estación de Belgrano R. Un día, como tenía amigas en la embajada estadounidense, trajo un paquete de una golosina llamada “candy corn”. Me dio unos pocos. Eran deliciosos. Y después puso el paquetito en un armario.

So I opened the armoire, when my mother was in the kitchen, and helped myself to a generous quantity of the lovely candy. There was a mirror on one of the doors. I saw myself.

When I say myself in the mirror I stared at myself and I had this thought, “That is me.”

Since that event, I have never forgotten it. To this day, when I see myself in the mirror, I realize that in spite of everything that has happened since then, 78 years later, I am the same person. Me.
