Marina Hasselberg - July 13 2018 |
In that past 20th century when I worked for good magazines, art directors were open to seeing my latest experimental photographs and to assign me to use them in jobs.
There is no doubt in my mind that had I shown these to Vancouver Magazine art director Chris Dahl I would have photographed lawyers of business men with the technique.
In photography failure can lead to marvellous results only if one is able to figure out how the method failed. On July 13 2018, while taking photographs of cellist Marina Hasselberg with a softbox, I switched to a ring flash. The flash chord was defective. When I downloaded the pictures that I took with a Fuji X-E3 camera there were 8 absolutely black vertical rectangles. I was about to toast them when I went to my 20-year-old Photoshop 8 levels and found images. When I “fixed” the colour was not quite right and the underexposure noise looked like that of very fast film.
I liked it.
When I checked the Exif data I found that I had taken the pictures at 200 ISO, 1/30 second at f-7.1(!). The nearby modelling light of my softbox had been enough to record a faint image.
I have now further modified my technique by taking only one exposure with the digital shutter on silent. I ask my subjects to cross their hands on their chest. After taking the photograph, my subjects leave my little studio with a signed 81/2 by 11 print in 7 minutes.
