Rosa sericea omeiensis Var. pteracantha 24 April 2022

Before my wife re-educated me, my idea of flowers were the ones my hostas had in June. Then, little by little, I was taught to appreciate roses and the flowers of the much smaller perennials that I had ignored for years.

By 1990 we were keen on noticing the first rose to bloom in our garden. It was only then that spring would be officially spring. For many years that first rose was Rosa ‘Blanc double de Courbet’. Then we had to move from our big garden. As soon as we gave many roses, including that one, to our daughter in Lillooet it was Rosa sericea omeiensis Var. pteracantha who is always the first out of the gate.

I felt a bit bad cutting the rose as there were two unopened buds. But this rose will in a few weeks will be full of these strange for rose species with its only four petals.

Because of the variation name of pteracantha I equate the rose to a flying dinosaur!
