In Spanish my grandmother used to tell me, “No hay mal que por bien no venga.” That translates to – Bad things happen for good reasons.
On September 19th, five photographers are going to project slides at the nice new photography gallery Gallery 881 which is at that address on East Hastings.
My guess is that the other four photographers will project digital slides with a digital projector. I happen to have a Linhof 6x7cm projector with a Leica lens. I will project 6x7cm transparencies that are mounted in glass Gepe slide mounts made in Holland.
I have hundreds of these in boxes. I decided today to pick
some for my presentation. I was almost overwhelmed and started labelling boxes,
Authors, Politicians, Family, Garden, etc. It was gruelling until I found these
slides in this blog. For a long time I was upset that I had lost the originals even though I have at least four of them enlarged and framed in the
house. I had forgotten about the one of Hilary and me. The portrait of Rebecca
in the sailor dress with Rosa ‘Mrs. Oakley Fisher’ in her hair is one of the
best portraits I have ever taken. After that portrait both Rosemary and I
considered that little single tea rose our favourite. It is comforting to have these originals.
So thank you, John Goldsmith (he runs Gallery 881). I found those signature slides thanks to you.
In photography lingo a slide is a 35mm one. A transparency is anything bigger.
