Sunday 6 August 2023 |
On Sunday, August 6, 2023 I was invited to participate as an “artist” in a two-and-a-half-hour dance class at the Simon Fraser Downtown Campus in the former Woodward’s. In charge was dancer/choreographer instructor Linda Arkelian. I brought with me the real artist Martin Guderna. These sessions are held in the summer on Sundays from noon to 2:30.
I told Arkelian that I was going to take my slow shutter dance photographs that I call swirls. I was not too sure the technique would work in a studio (a lovely one) that had daylight and not the darkness of dance performances with black walls and theatrical lighting.

To be blunt, I was nervous taking my photographs perhaps because I was uncertain. I did not
think my photographs would work. But Martin and I had great fun watching the
unusual class that has dancers with experience and some that are not. It is a
drop-in situation. Arkelian hums and makes noises that are funny. We adored
her. There is a lovely white baby grand so sometimes she gets someone to play it. This time she had recorded music that she accompanied with her unusual humming.
And when I went home and downloaded my photographs I was surprised, that indeed they were not all that bad.
