Gary Cramer & the Works - 1979 |
Technology and yours truly simply do not get along. I have been having tremendous password problems. A friend, Djun Kim, genius at this stuff, came today and a few issues were resolved. I wanted to show him an Argentine DVD but we could not make the remotes (I have 3) work to click on play. We gave up. Tomorrow I will have to call the Best Buy Geek Squad and see if they can come over and resolve the TV issue.
But while Kim was at it with my computer in my office, and I certainly could not help him, I found a big binder which has many of my earliest photographs beginning in 1958/59. I had been upset as I did not know where they were. Now I can file them and forget them?
Not quite as there were two negatives files called Judy Brown. She was my first girl in 1962 Mexico City. When I brought her over to a friend’s house I was told that they were relieved as they thought I was gay.
My memory does not serve me well as I scanned my fave image and I made a new folder in my computer called Judy Brown. There was another one by that name. My new scan is really no better than an older one. I have no idea when I did those earlier scans. There were even two lovely pseudo cyanotypes I do using Corel Paint Shop Pro XII.
It is a relief to have found this lost binder. But because I have been mulling over now for months my Rosemary’s nonexistence, I look at these pictures of Judy Brown not knowing where she might be or even if she is alive.
There is one pleasant reaction within me when I see these
pictures of her that really are some of my first portraits. And the group shot of Gary Cramer & the Works was my first Vancouver Magazine rock photograph. I did not know what I was doing but somehow I was lucky and it is one of my fave ever rock photographs.
For Judy Brown's portraits I used a Pentacon-F SLR with a Komura 85mm f:1.8 lens. The film was Agfa Isopan Record pushed to 1250 ISO and processed in Agfa Atomal New. The single candle was my light source.
I feel lucky that so much of my past photographic life has not been lost. Even though I don’t really care about legacy, while I am alive I am happy to know that it is all there.
