Jane
Rule’s Brownies
These are the brownies that Jane Rule used to
dole out to the kids around her swimming pool
on Galiano Island, B.C.
2 cups
white sugar
4 oz unsweetened
chocolate
½ cup
butter
4
eggs
¼ tsp
vanilla
1 cup
all-purpose flower
1 cup walnut
pieces
Preheat oven to 325 degrees Fahrenheit
1 Sift the sugar
and set aside.
2 Over hot water,
melt the chocolate and
butter and set
aside.
3 Beat the eggs
until light and frothy, add
salt, then
gradually add the sifted sugar.
4 Fold the mixture
into the melted chocolate
and add the
vanilla.
5 Stir in the
flour and combine well. Fold in
the walnut
pieces.
6 Bake in a
greased 9” x 13” pan at 325 degrees for
35 minutes.
7. Cool, then cut into squares.
