Rosa 'A Shropshire Lad' 28 September 2025 |
Leander
Leander was a young man in the Greek myth of Hero and Leander who fell in love with Hero, a priestess of Aphrodite. Living on opposite sides of the Hellespont strait, he swam across the water each night to be with her, guided by a lamp she lit in her tower. He ultimately drowned attempting to cross the strait one stormy night, and in despair, Hero then threw herself from the tower into the sea.
Rosa ‘Leander’ was a rose in my Rosemary’s heart. It was a fave that did not survive the move from Kerrisdale to Kitsilano. A friend found a rose in back alley of a house that was going to be demolished. She dug it up and gave it to Rosemary as she thought it was Leander’.
Today I saw only a couple of roses in bloom. Here is one of them Rosa ‘A Shropshire Lad. But I was amazed when I noticed the fall leaves of Rosa ‘Leander’.
My Rosemary would have smiled.
