I write because I have nothing to do in this world: I am a leftover, there is no room for me in this world of men. I write in despair and fatigue… and if it not were for the novelty that it is always to write, I would die symbolically every day.

I can fry eggs perfectly, hem my jeans and sew on buttons. Why is this? Because of the feminists I have known in my life. There were three of them, my grandmother, my mother and my wife Rosemary.

My grandmother was a widow at a very young age with two daughters and a son. She left her native Manila with her family for the Bronx in the early 20s. She worked as a typist and she gave her salary to my 11 year old mother-to-be, Filomena who handled all the finances. My grandmother saw the writing on the wall about the stock market crash so they all moved back to Manila. In 1938 she predicted the winds of war and the family travelled and settled in Buenos Aires.

Mi abuelita enviudó de joven y con dos hijas y un hijo se trasladaron de su ciudad de Manila al Bronx en Nueva York. Trabajaba como secretaria para la compañía Sydney Ross. Le daba su salario a su hija mayor Filomena 11 (que llegaría a ser mi mamá) y ella se encargaba de las finanzas y de las comidas. En los principios de los 20 pudo notar que el mercado estaba con problemas. Volvieron a las Filipinas pero en 1938 se dio cuenta que habría pronto una gran guerra. Se fueron a vivir en Buenos Aires.
In 1952 my grandmother was uncomfortable with the fact that Perón was burning churches. And she knew my father was an alcoholic. She sent my mother to Mexico City (her sister lived there) to see if it was a good place to move to. This we did in 1953. It was only in 1965 that doing my conscription in the Argentine Navy I was able to locate my father who had not known what had happened to us. I was amazed that with a smile on his face when I knocked on his door he asked me with a smile how my grandmother was. He had a great respect for her.
En 1952 mi abuelita se preocupó por el hecho de que Perón estaba quemando Iglesias. Mandó a mi mamá a la ciudad de México en donde vivía mi tía Dolly, para ver si nos podríamos vivir allí. En 1953 nos mudamos y abandonamos a mi papá alcohólico. En 1965 cuando regresé a Buenos Aires para hacer mi conscripción obligatoria en la Marina de Guerra Argentina pude encontrar a mi papá. Cuando le toqué la puerta me preguntó cómo estaba mi abuela con una sonrisa. A pesar de todo le tenía respeto.
My mother as a virtual widow worked hard as a teacher and my grandmother gave me an education based on the aphorisms of the Don Quixote. She saved me from spankings by telling my mother that I was an artist just like she was. Both these women taught me to be independent. This is something I somehow lost when I met my Rosemary in Mexico City in 1967. She handled finances and made the decision for us to move to Vancouver in 1975.I soon learned that I had to cook and do most of the household cleaning. Rosemary worked hard and tolerated my expenses in buying new photographic equipment or framing my photographs for shows were I sold nothing.
Mi mamá, en realidad casi una viuda, trabajaba como maestra y mi abuela me educaba con ayuda de los consejos de Sancho Panza. Me salvó de muchos chinelazos de mi mamá diciéndole que como ella (mi abuela) yo también era un artista y había que tener paciencia conmigo. Ambas mujeres me enseñaron a ser independiente. Pero tengo que admitir que perdí esta independencia cuando conocí a mi Rosemary en la Ciudad de México en 1967. Se encargaba de nuestras finanzas y decidío para nosotras nuestro traslado a Vancouver en 1975. Pronto aprendí que you tenía que cocinar y encargarme de los aseos domésticos. Ella ganaba bien en su trabajo y toleraba mis gastos en equipo nuevo fotográfico y los altos costos de enmarcar mis fotos para muestras en las cuales no vendía nada.
With my Rosemary’s death on 9 December 2020 I have attempted (no well at all) to live alone with my two cats after having been married for 52 years. Luckily I have two daughters who advise me on banking, wellness medicines, and manage to cheer me up. It would seem that they inherited from the three independent women of my former life. And thanks to the feminists of my life I appreciate and read Joan Didion, Alfonsina Storni, Alejandra Pizarnik and Clarice Lispector. And I have a new friend in Mexico, Marina Taibo Sáiz whom I met a few weeks ago in the Twenty Third Mexico City Book Fair. I appreciate her gentle nudgings. She reminds me of my Rosemary. I am sure that her husband José Manuel hems his jeans.
Con la muerte de mi Rosemary el 9 de diciembre del 2020, he intentado (no muy bien) vivir solo con mis dos gats, después de haber estado casado 52 años. Por suerte tengo dos hijas que me cuidan y me asesoran sobre mis finanzas. Me alegran la vida un poco. Pareciera que heredaron de las tres mujeres independientes de mi anterior vida. Y gracias a todas esas feministas aprecio y leo a Joan Didion, Alfonsina Storni, Alejandra Pizarnik, Clarice Lispector.
Tengo una nueva amiga en la Ciudad de México que conocí hace unas dos semanas en la Feria Del Libro. Se llama Marina Taibo Sáiz. Aprecio sus leves empujes a leer esto o el otro. Me recuerda a mi Rosemary. Estoy seguro que su pioresnada, José Manuel, sabe hacer huevos estrellados perfectos.
