The Liberty To Die

Abraham Rogatnick

My friend Abraham Rogatnick who died almost six years ago did not commit suicide. A year before he died he decided he was not going to prolong his painful prostate cancer problem. He told me he was going to die a year before he did. He gave me a wonderful Mexican papier-mâché skeleton, “I am not going to need him.”  Since then Pancho (as I call him) has been our constant and most evident companion in our dining room (the old one and the new one). Pancho is a constant reminder to me if like Abraham I will have the luxury of being able to choose when I die.

THE HEART asks pleasure first,
And then, excuse from pain;
And then, those little anodynes
That deaden suffering;

And then, to go to sleep;
And then, if it should be
The will of its Inquisitor,
The liberty to die.

Emily Dickinson

The shutting of the eye
The rat is the concisest tenant
The light exists in spring
The lady dare not lift her veil
 I took my power in my hand
 I find my feet have further goals
 I cannot dance upon my toes
The Music of the Violin does not emerge alone
Red Blaze
He touched me, so I live to know
Rear Window- The Entering Takes Away
Said Death to Passion
 We Wear the Mask That Grins And Lies
It was not death for I stood alone
The Music in the Violin Does Not Emerge Alone
I tend my flowers for thee
Lavinia Norcross Dickinson
Pray gather me anemone!
Ample make her bed
His caravan of red
Me-come! My dazzled face
Develops pearl and weed

But peers beyond her mesh
Surgeons must be very careful
Water is taught by thirst
I could not prove that years had feet
April played her fiddle
A violin in Baize replaced
I think the longest hour
The spirit lasts
