Waiting for Godot To Bang on My Drum

Nicole McLuckie & Morris Panych

Of this photograph of theatrical director Morris Panych and Nicole McLuckie (wearing the bowler hat) I have written about here and here. In the latter link I explain the significance of the bowler hats in Samuel Beckett’s Waiting for Godot.

I shot it and the colour one on March 19, 2006. The first I took in the foyer to the Art Club’s Stanley Theatre. For the colour one I used my lights and the set was lit for me.

The colour version became the cover for the Georgia Straight and the black and white was the inside one.

For me (and sometimes I must bang on my own drum) the first one is one of the simplest but best photographs I have ever taken. That simplicity mimics the fact that the usual Waiting for Godot set is devoid of anything and the bowler hats somehow are what the characters use to define themselves.
