That Béla Bartók Girl

Rebecca Wenham

I have a friend who plays the cello extremely well. She has to as among the things she does is that she plays for Marc Destrubé’s Microcosmos String Quartet. I can think of no person who would be more demanding in spite of the fact that Destrubé has a gentle smile.

Rebecca Wenham is a delight to watch her when she and the Microcosmos Quartet play Bartok.

There are some moments when I think that Wenham is going to destroy her cello in much the same way as Turning Point Ensemble pianist Jane Hayes (superb she is) often makes me think her Steinway is going to collapse under her feet.

But then the cello was one of the instruments that Béla Bartók played and Wenham most probably channels the Hungarian.

This is why I call Rebecca Wenham “That Bartok Girl”
