My friend George McWhirter, the Belfast born poet and novelist who happens to be the first Vancouver Poet Laureate (March 8 2007), is an expert translator from Spanish to English. He translates the poems of Mexican poet and novelist (and environmentalist) Homero Aridjis.
We have discussed with smiles the impossibility of translating into English a line from the Jorge Luís poem La lluvia (The Rain):
Le reveló una flor llamada rosa
Y el curioso color del colorado.
